2024 Mar 24 | Grenada mission trip - arriving
I took the Monterey Airbus, although now it's called Groome, to SFO.
I was the first one he picked up at the Monterey Airport.
There are plugs and wifi; that's helpful.
Picking up a few more passengers along the way.
SFO has some neat ceiling art.
These are really cool.
Upside-down metallic desert scenes, including Joshua trees.
A silent disco in the airport?
Ogii and I generally split a meal. There's no way I'm finishing this huge burrito by myself.
FlightAware says my 10:10pm flight from SFO to MIA is delayed an hour, but it's only 5pm now. I wonder why that is? Let's check where the plane is.
While the weather in San Francisco wasn't too bad, there was a thunderstorm in Miami. Since that's where my plane was coming from, it got delayed, so my flight got delayed.
An ad for Meow Wolf in Las Vegas. We went to the Denver one with Monica; it was really cool.
Artwork that looks 3D.
These lights are cool, too.
Free cold, warm, and hot water you can fill yourself.
I don't like that; what if I'm somewhere else and miss the announcement? It's not like this is a library.
A robot arm sells you drinks.
Thankfully we boarded only an hour late.
It's so annoying when people don't put their luggage in correctly on the full flights.
Because then they have to pull it out and rearrange it, making us later.
Sunrise headed into Miami.
The sun.
Pretty clouds.
Miami below.
Skyscrapers.
Two different people had medical issues on the plane. Not bad enough we had to land emergently, but someone behind me got an IV. I didn't even know airlines had those on board.
Welcome to Miami. It felt like around a quarter of the people were speaking Spanish at the airport.
Neat floor sea animal design.
The Starbucks line is huge.
The line at Dunkin Donuts is also long, but not as bad.
So expensive.
It's still raining in Miami.
So the flight to Grenada also kept getting delayed.
Ooh, maybe I'll have the entire row to myself.
Somebody sat in the aisle, but at least the middle seat stayed open.
Long line of planes waiting to take off.
Finally we get going after a 3-hour delay.
Rainbow and shadow of the plane.
The island of Grenada below us.
It's always nice when the phone works there.
A little outside bar at the airport.
When we arrived, Roy picked us up.
They told us to use the Haylup app if we needed rides on our own; it's their version of Uber / Lyft.
Lighthouse statue.
They drive on the left here.
Big houses up on a hill.
We stayed at the Bougainvillea Apartments.
My room.
Bedroom, with a separate A/C from the living room / kitchen.
Bathroom.
They have both Grenada and US outlets; that's helpful.
They supplied us with body wash.
And towels.
And they even stocked some food for breakfast.
I bought some scrubs for the trip.
Some of the others stayed upstairs.
A ton of rain, but only for a few minutes.
The pizza place wrote positive statements inside the boxes.
There are a couple of grocery stores only a few blocks away.
Food Fair.
Their money.
It's worth about 1/3 of the US dollar.
Various small stores nearby.
We were staying close to the Radisson.
The boutique shop there.
Foyer.
Walkway.
Pool.
Game room.
Bar.
Restaurant.
The beach.
There's a sign on this tree.
You can get massages on the beach.
Looking one way.
And the other.
Snorkeling and SCUBA ads.
Some Indians on the beach were celebrating Holi. I took a group picture for them.
These guys were playing volleyball.
Oops, not volleyball, sepak takraw, or soccer volleyball where they can't use their hands, only their head and feet.
Another resort.
Another snorkel / SCUBA place.
Their boat ready to go.
They have tours to these popular underwater sculptures.
Nice ocean mural.
Spiceland mall.
Which has the larger IGA supermarket.
Someone in our group mentioned they couldn't find kimchi at the other supermarket, so I texted them it was here.
Lots of hair products.
Only a few rolls of tape.
It's the 50th anniversary in Grenada, so many places had red, yellow, and green banners for it.
Community bulletin board.
Walking through the rest of the mall.
It's mostly still closed as it's only 9am.
The tourist shop was open, though.
Bags.
This store priced things in US dollars. The grocery stores would also take US dollars, but only if you showed them a US driver's license.
An optical.
They have the same contact lenses as in the US.
And the same solutions, too.
Mall directory.
Food court.
Phone store. If T-Mobile hadn't worked here, I would have gotten a local SIM card.
Lawyer and doctor. Good to know, just in case.
Payless shoe store.
Many restaurants walking the few blocks back to our apartments.
A gaming lounge.
Grill.
Another one.
And even food trucks.
Another neat anniversary sign.
Their sidewalks are not ADA compliant. Even without a wheelchair, I still have to be careful to not fall in the hole.
There are also multiple stores back by the Food Fair grocery store.
A Western Union. Again, good to know, just in case.
And a pharmacy.
