2024 Apr 08 | Texas with family - total solar eclipse

The upcoming eclipse is front page on the newspapers.

I brought some solar eclipse glasses.

Walmart was selling them, too.

A big sign about the eclipse.

This guy was buying a ton of drinks.

Many Walmarts allow RVs to stay in their parking lots. Not this week, though.

Lunch.

Sisters chatting.

Times of the eclipse here.

We're right in the center for maximum eclipse time.

The one major problem with eclipses is that you're at the mercy of the weather. Historically, Texas was supposed to have the clearest skies, but this day, it seemed to be better farther northeast. Too late to drive 10+ hours to try to get somewhere else, though, so hopefully it'll be OK here.

There are some clouds.

Although they're not constant.

Most of the yard is in sun.

Checking out the skies.

Ogii is ready.

Just starting.

All of us watching.

Ogii was smart and taped a piece of a solar glasses on her phone.

So far the clouds are pretty light.

A bit farther.

We brought chairs out onto the lawn.

Ogii eating an ice pop.

About a quarter.

Almost half.

Some neighbors watching.

And some others.

About three-quarters.

Uh oh, some denser clouds are coming.

We can still catch glimpses of it through them at times.

Pretty covered by clouds.

A short opening.

Kind of bad timing with clouds; they're pretty heavy right when totality is about to start.

Almost there.

Very attentive.

We don't need our solar glasses any more during totality.

While we didn't get great luck with the clouds, we did see at least parts of every stage, so much better than it could have been.

The diamond ring effect, just as the sun sun starts to come out of totality.

The sun starting to re-appear.

A short video of sections of the eclipse. It was like dusk in the middle of the day during totality. Overall, it was a really awesome experience.

Some quick good-byes to try to beat all of the cars leaving.

Now that we're done with that, time to drive back to San Antonio. Normally it would be about an hour without traffic.

So far, not too bad.

Some slowdowns starting.

Still OK.

And now we're in lots of traffic.

The time is starting to creep up a bit.

Fun license plate.

These guys were out watching in their yard.

There were many pretty flowers along the side of the road.

And in the median.

Pretty consistent traffic in our direction; almost nothing in the other.

That dog is quite a ways out of the window, but it looks like the driver has a good hold on it.

Yep.

Tons of overpasses in San Antonio. It took about 2.5 hours to get there, so not too horrible.

Time for some BBQ.

This place looks good.

All different types of meat and side dishes.

Dig in!
