2024 May 17 | thrift store shopping, baby monk seal, Friday night fireworks
Scott's flip flops, another good brand, at Target.
A bit expensive.
A different brand.
Much cheaper.
Target and Walmart have their bags near the checkout counters, but they're not always in the same location, so you have to look around for them.
A fair number of intersections have these, "No turn on red except from right lane after stop." There's one intersection near us where there are two right-turn lanes, so you don't want to be in the left one, because then you can't turn on red. However, after we turn, we often then need the far left lane to make a left turn within a block. So then if you're approaching the first light and you can make it through the green light, you actually want to be in the left lane as you stay in that lane for the next left turn, whereas if you're in the right lane (that can turn right on red), you have to switch lanes to the left quickly.
Walmart has some 4th of July hats.
Looking for yoga mats.
They have a few different ones, but most are quite thin.
We wanted thick ones, but this location only had one.
I also wanted some headbands. Those were in the tennis section.
I also wanted a utility cart, but those weren't in the Honolulu store because that store is smaller as rent is higher in the city.
So I have to drive to Pearl City to get one. That's OK, though; it's only 30 mintues away, and they might have another thick yoga mat there, too.
Lots of carts at the Pearl City Walmart.
This one is broken.
Deciding which one is best.
Very lifted yota.
Mural with the city name.
Thrift store there.
I wanted some cheap bags to use for the gym.
This one was only $3.
More bags over here.
Tennis balls.
Lots of kitchen supplies.
Another store.
Lots of clothes.
These bags are brand new.
Burberry.
Ah, they were gift bags.
Another yota.
And another.
And another.
Another thrift store.
Also lots of clothes.
The Skyline light metro system is only a year old. They plan to extend it farther into Honolulu in time.
Another thrift store.
Cheap prices.
There are even some prescription glasses here. I wonder how likely someone is to get the correct prescription?
Lots of clothes.
Some furniture.
The Dole Cannery is near Costco and has a lot of stores, including the Regal movie theater we went to.
There is also another Eco-Town, the upscale thrift store, like the one in Ala Moana Mall.
This one is much larger, though.
Purses.
With security trackers.
Many aloha shirts.
Musical instruments.
Camera equipment.
Computers and video games.
TVs and stereo systems.
Many small Japanese manga sculptures.
Shoes.
The same brand as Ogii's sandals.
Six speed with a neat color.
A very cheap house, fee simple, and huge, with 6 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. But it's in Waianae, which is where there are more homeless and meth addicts.
Cool peacock suit.
Not too expensive.
Shiny shoes, too.
Xanax license plate.
Kapiolani Regional Park.
People playing soccer there.
Back to Kaimana Beach to check out the baby monk seal again.
A few people watching them.
This time the mother and baby had gotten separated by the net fence used to keep people away.
A police officer tried to help, but momma growled at him for getting too close.
So he walked to the other side and clapped to get the baby's attention until it worked its way around the fence.
Together.
A video.
A couple of other seals nearby.
Lots of surfers.
Us.
People watching from the other side.
This guy was carrying a mattress on his bag. I asked if he needed help, but he said he was fine.
Every Friday night at 7:45pm (or a bit later in the summer) there are fireworks at the Hilton Waikiki lagoon.
At 7:40pm, there are a lot of people there to watch.
There they go.
Us.
The finale. I was surprised everyone was so close to where they shoot them off from; you could actually feel a bit of debris falling on you.
Video of the fireworks.
There is a hot dog stand right there. Amazing location, at least for Friday nights.
