2024 Jun 07 | Makiki farmer's market, 123456 mileage, King Kamehameha Statue Lei Draping
Matson put a green sticker on the back of the RAV4.
And a red one on the front. I wonder what they are for?
Since Amazon doesn't ship these batteries, I had to go in person. They were a bit expensive at CVS, so I thought I'd try Target. Thankfully their website tells you exactly which aisle they are in.
Except, there are none here. Next time I go to Target for a particular item, I'm going to order it as a pick-up so I know it will be ready.
The post office in the Ala Moana mall has a bit of a line; good reminder to try to avoid it and go to other locations instead.
Ogii's favorite buildings.
I went to the library to pick up my new library card so I can read The Economist and other magazines online for free. There was also a stack of these summer reading program cards from McDonald's for a free dessert.
Raiders fan and lots of sharks.
A shaka plate. We almost never see these.
Another one. The first ones were EU, which is what the Prius has.
The RAV4 is EX, which we haven't seen yet.
An Illinois plate.
An Army plate from Texas. You have to register your vehicle within a month of it arriving in Hawaii, but you can choose to keep your existing license plates for a year or when they expire. However, people in the military don't have to change state residency and many of their home states will renew their license plates remotely, so they can keep out-of-state plates much longer.
Many homeless tents along this road.
It's a fairly long group.
Huaka'i is Hawaiian for trip.
There are two exits from our building, north and south. Each leads to a one-way street in the opposite direction. Every once in a while you will see a car turn the wrong way down one of the one-way streets, although in this case, the driver recognized it quickly and turned around. So alwasy looks both ways, even on one-way streets.
We now have two vehicles and only one parking space, so we paid $150 for a month, which is on the low side for monthly parking around here, to park in this garage near the Ala Moana mall until we drive the Prius 500 more miles and can sell it. The RAV4 has a friend here; another orange vehicle.
We saw these Slingshots parked in the same garage.
More on the other side. I wonder how much they make renting them out.
We don't have a crock pot any more, so we made roast on the stove. It was OK, but not as good as in a crock pot.
The PyroDinos from Monica.
Actually, these are new ones I ordered. We decided to not open the ones from Monica until after we moved to Hawaii. Then, once we opened them, the instructions said open within a few days of receiving them or they'll die. Maybe they should put that notice on the outside of the package? And, obviously, opening them two months later meant they were all dead. But the new ones we ordered came fast and were alive.
Sunbeams up.
And down.
Daniel Negreanu is posting a daily vlog during the World Series of Poker.
He shares more about his personal life than most other poker vloggers. One neat thing is that he and his wife put out snacks for delivery drivers.
In these little cabinets.
Including sodas.
In a minifridge.
He also has a red-light bed, which he thinks helps.
A Cybertruck.
Mural of a couple in a hot tub near Mount Fuji.
Checking out another farmer's market, Makiki.
We almost skipped this one because there was hardly any available parking. We circled around the nearby blocks a few times before finding a spot.
It was also much smaller, with less than 10 vendors.
A musician.
Cooking food.
Sushi.
I'm glad we stopped, though, because there was Aloha Germany Bakery. The family moved here last here from south Germany to be with the wife's father, and the flour they use to bake is from Germany.
We got schnitzel, potatoes, a pretzel, and a few desserts from them. All were very good. And I got to speak a tiny bit of German with them, too.
The stone glue for the chess piece arrived. It worked great; much better than super glue.
We saw these tiny sailboats with rainbow sails in the canal.
There were only a couple of people per boat.
And there were two non-sail boats that seemed to be helping them.
Like when they got blown into and stuck along the side. I'd assume it's some kind of sailing training.
They look like these boats. I wonder if we could learn to sail with them?
Monday and Friday mornings are street cleaning along Ala Wai Blvd.
There are usually at least a few people who miss the sign and get towed.
Although the tow truck blocks traffic for a bit while it gets turned around.
And it's after 11am, so I think the street sweeper has already gone through, which means towing the vehicles doesn't make it any easier for the sweeper to clean. At this point, the towing is purely punitive, not beneficial to the actual sweeping.
The Prius hit 123456 on the odometer. The original plan was to drive 78mph on a California highway, which would be normal as everyone goes 80 on those. However, in Hawaii, nobody goes nearly that fast, even on the few miles of highway with a 60mph speed limit. Ogii noted we could go 7mph, though, so that gets us one extra digit. Then I thought we could do it when it's 89 degrees out. Except the car is parked in a garage, so it won't get to 89 degrees there; only 85.
So we parked it out in the sun to see if we could get it hotter.
Well that didn't work. It's actually somehow cooler. I guess we'll be happy with eight digits.
Pretty mural.
Yota.
Mural of a runner.
Safeway weekly ad.
Ogii wants this fruit tart.
Whereas I'm after the $5 Friday deli deals. They're popular, though, so they run out.
Just have to wait a few minutes for them to make more.
There's usually a bit of a line, but it's not too bad.
Ogii found some $5 sushi, too.
Safeway is generally considered a bit more expensive than most of the other grocery stores, but we've found the prices pretty similar, especially with the member discounts, which saved around 40% this time.
They have many self check-out stalls.
Coinstar, toys, Redbox, and Bank of Hawaii ATM.
A tiny self-service post office spot.
And a fun soda display.
Even sitting on the rooftop garage in the sun at Safeway didn't get the temperature to 89.
Palm tree mural.
Beach mural.
Mermaid mural on the side of a delivery truck.
New Jersey license plate; that's a long ways from home.
There was a lei draping at the King Kamehameha Statue.
Some guards with very long spears.
In traditional outfits.
A group would give a lei to these guys...
... who would put it on two large poles...
... to lift it up onto the statue's arms.
Those are some very long leis.
A video.
Across the street is the Iolani Palace.
Seal.
Us.
Old lights and mirror.
History mural.
Sitting in the sun didn't get the car hot enough, but driving on the highway...
... finally got the temperature to 89. Except now the mileage is higher.
Traffic is busy in our direction but not the other.
Yota.
Aloha shaka sticker.
We drove out to western Walmarts to look at golf clubs, since the one in Honolulu is smaller and didn't have much. Even the larger stores didn't have much of a selection, though.
