Up early to head for Kaupo Beach for sunrise. Along the way we passed Sandy Beach.
And the Makapuu trail, which even this early has a huge line of cars parked along the side of the road.
A few people headed to the trail.
Manana Island (also called Rabbit Island) is the larger one and Kaohikaipu Island is the smaller one. They are both seabird sanctuaries.
Looking back at the Makapuu Lighthouse.
Some parking along the side of the road.
Stone hills inland.
A bit of a bath through the grass.
Kaupo Beach.
Walking along the stony outcroppings.
It's a short, easy hike.
There are many black rocks on the beach below.
Rabbit Island.
Nice color.
Sitting under the rocky outcroppings.
Sunrise.
A crab hiding in a crack.
A snail left a trail behind.
Arrows pointing the way, although there's no way to get lost.
Crab on a rock.
Close up.
What is this? Do they have praying mantises in Hawaii?
A quick Google search says they do.
Tiny crab.
If the crabs see you coming, many of them will bury themselves in sand in only a few seconds. Here you can still see the top of it, but if they're closer to the water and the waves wash over them, the sand will completely cover them in only one or two waves and you'll have no idea they are there.
A lot of rocks on the beach here.
Another crab.
A video of some of the animals.
Someone put a stone right at the edge of an outcropping.
Ogii standing on one.
A short walk back up.
A bird is hanging out on top of this vehicle.
Back past the Makapuu trailhead.
Some cyclists.
The car beside us has a cover that keeps blowing off in the wind.
We put it back up, but then it always blows back off.
We've seen surprisingly few roaches in Hawaii for the few months we've been here.
This was a larger one in our elevator.
At the local hardware store to get a RAV4 key. We want a simple metal one so we can keep it with us while snorkeling while we leave the one with the fob in the vehicle.
The employee who cuts keys was named Donovan; similar names.
Pretty kitchen utensils.
This lot is for sale. I wonder if we could start any sort of business here? There are no car washes in this area, so maybe that would do well. Although I read almost all of the self-service ones went out of business because it was too expensive to reclaim the water once a law was passed requiring them to do that, and the full-service ones are quite expensive to start.
Elephant mural on a Thai restaurant.
Zippy's is a local fast-food chicken chain.
They have lots of other food, too, and also a bakery.
We got a combo meal.
These stick-on bifocal lenses are a neat idea.
Unfortunately they generally get bad reviews saying they're blurry or don't stay attached.
Super-thin reading glasses.
The movie Tangerine has many locations around Los Angeles we remember, like this laundromat with the statues in front.
And the super-bright bus seats.
The extras at Donut Time were not paid actors but actual customers who walked in during shooting.
Ogii having a relaxing morning.
We bought this phone holder to take sunrise timelapses from the balcony. It's also helpful for holding the phone when you want to watch videos on it.
Ogii also uses it by her computer.
The high rises leave long shadows.
Uh oh, there are some spots on the plumeria leaves.
On the top...
... and the bottom.
They're on multiple leaves.
Google says they're rust, a fungus.
So far most of the leaves aren't infected, so we might be able to save the plant by removing the infected leaves and spraying the others with antifungus.
The leaves "bleed" when you remove them.
You don't want to remove too many leaves at a time or it might kill the plant.
What's on this wall?
It looks like lips.
Did people actually kiss this wall? Or are they stamps or something?
Ogii made chislic. These two pieces looked like angels.
Yota.
Different types of oranges.
I don't particularly like the navel ones, so let's try cello.
These cherry plums are good.
Many Hawaiian snacks.
The Kona coffee glazed macadamia nuts are quite expensive.
Bought some antifungal spray for the plumeria.
A plane right between the two skyscrapers.
Different umbrellas.
I always used to like the crafts section of Walmart when I made a lot of costumes.
Ogii kicked a shirt from the floor into the washer. I asked her to do it again for a video, and it took her a few attempts.
