2024 Jul 14 | Lance and Sarah: Mongolian Naadam at Magic Island, Byodo-in Temple, Waimea Bay rock jumping

We saw another hot lava RAV4. We shaka'd each other.

Nevada.

Luisiana.

Ogii making food for the Mongolian Naadam.

Me helping a bit.

Ready to go.

Cute animal images on the bus.

Some Mongolians were meeting at Magic Island.

Preparing dough.

Ogii pinching one closed.

That's a lot.

Cooking.

Cooking more meat over here.

Looks good.

All done.

Group photo, with some people in traditional outfits.

Time to eat.

It was a smaller group, under 15 people, but it was nice meeting everyone.

In the evening we went to Hawaii Kai for a home poker game.

Guy 1 had the best hand preflop (AA), I had the best hand on the flop when we all went all in (two pair), guy 2 had the best hand on the turn (flush), and then guy 1 had the best hand on the river (bigger flush). Crazy.

Some double board bomb pots. You have to be careful with these, as you can get quartered, where one person wins one board, and then you split the other board with another player. In which case, you put in a third of the total money, but you only get back a quarter of it, so even though you get money back, you actually lose money.

Whoever wins this hand wins the wine.

Lance got it!

Stopping at Leonard's Bakery.

Fresh malasadas.

Since 1952.

Lots of old pictures.

Tom Selleck from Magnum PI.

Then we drove to the Byodo-in Temple.

Selfie.

Golden bird statues.

A giant bell you can ring.

It was cast in Japan.

Everyone ringing it.

A small meditation Pavilion.

Buddha.

A small pond.

Lance and Sarah.

The temple is a replica of one in Japan.

Ogii lighting incense.

Placing it.

And praying.

Big Buddha.

Walking down the temple.

Some vendors.

Large pond.

Black swan.

Statues.

A shop.

Where you could buy food to feed the fish.

The swan wanted some food, too.

A peacock.

Video of it.

Donated bench.

The temple from across the pond.

Picture of us.

Ohio.

Bikers doing wheelies.

Next we went to the north shore and stopped at a food truck park.

Shrimp stand-in.

Some of the other trucks.

I'd like Korean BBQ, but they're closed.

So we tried the shrimp truck.

Lots of good food.

A quick stop at Laniakea Beach to watch sea turtles.

They were mostly out in the water.

Although sometimes they'd wash up onto the edge.

Some flippers sticking out.

A video of the turtles.

Then we went to Waimea Bay.

A video of people jumping off the rock.

A lot of people in the water below.

Getting close to sunset.

The camera low to get more sand.

Some larger rays.

And reflection.
