2024 Aug 23 | Duke's OceanFest surfing dogs

Cute murals on some electrical boxes.

Watching Seinfeld. When George decides to do the opposite of everything he thinks he should do.

Planet Fitness seems to be the least busy between 3pm and 4pm.

Ogii's puzzle is coming along.

I helped her by organizing the pieces by shape.

Purple sunrise.

I wonder why a bee would fly this high. The flowers are mostly way down below.

Sorry, can't have you inside. Have to catch you in a glass and toss you out.

Duke's OceanFest, a surfing competition, was this week. Today was the Raising Cane's Going to the Dogs SurFUR ComPETition, so I went to the beach to watch that.

Yota by the Surfer on a Wave statue.

A little bit of a rainbow by the Makua and Kila statue.

Big rainbow now with a bit of a double one above it.

The lineup. They go out in groups of four surfers, each group consisting of different types of dogs.

People setting up to watch.

They filled buckets with and tied them to the canopies. That's much easier than hauling around weights to keep the canopies from flying away.

I sat over here by the shower.

Not too many people yet.

I sat by Stephanie Massey, one of the surfers, and Jonathan. They had two tiny dogs; one was surfing today, and the other will be next year.

The surfers by the Duke Paoa Kahanamoku statue.

More people have started to show up to watch. Good thing I sat on the higher ridge so they don't block my view.

He has a big lens.

One more rainbow.

Then time for the surfing to start. The first heat was dogs surfing on their own. The owner would catch a wave, then hop off the board...

... letting the dog surf alone. This was Church, a pitbull, who looked really cool with his sunglasses.

Rolo, a Yorkshire terrier.

Kimo, a heeler ridgeback cattle dog.

Puka, a mixed hound.

If you're out all day taking pictures, it's good to have protection from the sun.

These women were up under some trees, so they didn't need the full-body coverage.

The rest of the heats were tandem, with the owner riding with the dog. The first one was extra-small dogs. Josh Bogle, in the yellow shirt with Maya, his Jack Russell terrier, had someone helping him get started.

That's because he's a quadruple amputee from lack of blood flow during a 17-day coma from a staph infection after stepping on a fish hook.

Stephanie Massey with Koa Nalu, a Yorkshire terrier.

Chris Casey with Chloe, a chihuahua-pomeranian.

Chris Chester with Bear, an Australian cattle dog mix.

They'd go back and for a few times, trying to find the best waves.

It was sometimes hard to find a good wave, so sometimes they had to paddle out a ways, but you can tell Stephanie was happy with this one.

Chris and Stephanie getting up.

And surfing.

Wipeout.

Waiting for the next wave.

Josh and Chris.

The next heat was medium-sized dogs. This had more paddleboarders than surfers.

C Tabiolo-Batyoon with Lilikoi Tide, an goldendoodle.

Nick Freeman with Poki, a poi dog. Poki doesn't care where they're going; he's only interested in the ball Nick is holding.

Raul Marin with Luna Pon, a blue cattle dog / collie.

James Williams with Sandy, a sharpei mix.

When they got close to the shore, sometimes the dogs would jump off and swim for it on their own.

The next heat was small dogs.

Fernando Juan lifted Jaxx, a Jack Russel terrier, onto the back.

Patrick Giles with Maxton, a Parsons russel terrier.

Devyn Lum with Ozzie, a poi dog.

Greg Dutcher with Dale, a French bulldog.

The next heat with mini tandem. Todd Kamisugi was with Bindi-Otto, a Boston terrier. It looks like another dog caught a ride with them as well.

Ron Johnson with S'mores, a mini Aussie shepherd.

Diana Ho with Bubba, a chihuahua poi.

The next heat was large dogs. Reef Robinson with Bandit, a border collie.

C Tabiolo-Batyoon is back with another gooldendoodle, Timber Kai.

Avery Stuever with Frontier, an Australian shepherd.

Brandon Martyn with Reef, a golden retreiver / chihuahua / pit mix.

Now time for the extra large dogs. James Pamplin is back with Church from the solo heat.

Doing a handstand.

Tyler Landon with Phoenix, a pit lab mix. He brought his ball.

Brent White with Ula, a heeler.

Brantly Baynes is also back from the solo heat with Puka, a mixed hound.

Pat Staiger with Gnarly Dawg, a Catahoula hound.

Many more spectators have shown up now.

Each heat lasted 30 minutes. As soon as one ended, the next began, so as surfers from the last heat came in, the surfers for the next heat headed out.

SUPDog Hawaii can teach you to surf with your dog or take you out paddle boarding with their dogs.

A video of some of the surfing humans and dogs.

Ogii finished her puzzle.

All done.

These two third-party batteries for my DLSR were completely dead. I tried charging them, but they didn't work at all. I kept them as backup batteries and almost never used them, so maybe that caused them to completely discharge?

I can't order another battery online because they won't ship it to Hawaii. I guess I'll have to find a brick-and-mortar camera store here.

One of the few times you can see the Twin Towers in Seinfeld. This is the end of The Chinese Woman from 1994, when Frank Costanza's caped lawyer helps Noreen down from the edge of the Brooklyn Bridge.

Monica sent me a book.

I'm not sure if this is the correct way to cut these fruits open, but it works for me. I basically shave off the hard outer section in sections all the way around the middle.

The wind is picking up; our bathroom mats are being blown around more.

Because tropical storm Hone is coming.

It should arrive in Oahu late Saturday night.

Neat gate.

You can tell if you're at the party in Hawaii by all of the shoes out front.

A poker game in Ewa Beach.

The owner had some puppies.

Which liked to play.

Double board bomb pot. I flopped the nut straight on both boards and we were all-in on the turn.

But the other guy made a full house on one, so we split it. That's too bad; I was 90% to win the entire pot.
