2024 Oct 16 | comet C2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) at Sunset Beach and Haleiwa Beach
A short rainbow in the valley.
Big gray clouds at sunset.
We drove to north shore to get a picture of the comet.
The traffic is especially bad around Pearl City.
But it should clear up once we pass it.
Kona is the name of a city on Big Island.
Lots of cars.
A yota.
Red one.
Gray one.
There's an HOV lane, but it doesn't go any faster than the other lanes.
Mural at an auto shop.
Unfortunately, we have no space for a goat.
It's fun driving through this tunnel of trees...
... and seeing the ocean once you get through them.
We had dinner at Spaghettini in Haleiwa.
A bakery beside it.
Many choices. We got chicken alfredo fettuccine to go as we wanted to get to the beach before sunset.
Some horses.
Another yota.
The parking lot at Sunset Beach was full, but we found a single space open along the highway.
A palm tree there that goes horizontally a long ways.
Us with it.
Sun and surfer.
We brought a beach towel to eat there.
Our food.
The sun is setting.
Surfers are heading home.
Time to find the comet.
I don't see it yet. Either it's still too bright out or it's behind the clouds.
There it is.
To the other side of the tree.
Zoomed in.
I'd like to get it with a single tall palm tree, too, so we stopped at a few places on the way home to scope them out for tomorrow.
Pupukea Beach Park has some.
As does Shark's Cove.
Waimea Bay Beach is likely too bright from the lights.
This open area with a few palm trees just south of Uppers Beach Park won't work, either, because it's private land.
Haleiwa Beach Park has multiple areas with multiple palm trees; that might work.
You also have to consider the direction the comet will be so it lines up correctly.
Some Halloween decorations.
I like how this one wrote "Boo!" on a rock.
Driving to north shore again the next day. We saw another hot lava RAV4.
And then a second one.
A lot of bumper stickers.
Yesterday we left around 4:30pm, and traffic was very bad. Today around 2:30pm it's clear.
Starting to get a little worse around 3pm.
A short area of heavy traffic around 3:30pm, but still better than yesterday.
A little food truck by the side of the road.
We ate at Spaghettini again. I wanted their pizza on the way back home last night, the huge New York style slices, but we were taking pictures too late, and they closed. So we got some today.
I wonder if chickens like pizza.
This little bird certainly would.
Looking around for little bits of food.
The North Shore Surf Shop is next door so Ogii can shop a bit.
Today I was really hoping to find a sea turtle and get a picture of the comet with it. We checked out Laniakea Beach, but there were none there, so we drove to Papa'Iloa Beach, which also sometimes have turtles. There were many houses there with nice gates.
Marine life.
Leaves.
Sunset into the waves.
Dolphins.
Komodo dragon.
The gate.
There was a little parking lot, but it was full. We parked on the side of the road a bit farther away.
Between all of the expensive houses is a small public path to the beach.
Down between the fences.
Looking to the south.
And the north. No turtles here, either.
The houses around here are huge.
Back on the road. A fun mailbox.
We thought this house was for sale at first.
But it's actually coconuts.
One more nice gate.
Then we headed to Haleiwa Beach Park.
Some of the surfers here are finishing up.
Walking north.
I almost didn't see this turtle; it blends in so well.
You're supposed to stay ten feet away.
Someone had put sticks down around it as boundary markers. Hopefully he doesn't swim away before the comet is visible.
There are still a lot of surfers out here.
Sunset, a surfer, and the turtle.
Walking farther north and it turns into Pua'ena Point Beach Park.
This one is much rockier.
Looking to the north.
I wonder if someone lives here.
The full moon is rising to the east.
And the comet is to the west.
There it is.
The turtle didn't move, so we got a picture of it with the comet.
Then we walked back to the park to get it with some vertical palm trees.
And with us.
A little frog hopping around.
Us with the full moon.
Even at night, it's still very hot and humid, so I was pretty sweaty from walking around all evening. I stopped at a gas station to grab a drink. I haven't seen Oreo Coke before; we can try that.
