2024 Nov 14 | Hong Kong - Big Bus tour of downtown Hong Kong Island

A Lego sculpture outside the mall.

Walking out to the Avenue of Stars, which has some statues.

Some people filming themselves.

The Hong Kong Film Awards statue, depicting a goddess holding a pearl.

The skyline.

Us with part of it.

A clock tower.

The ferry comes every seven minutes.

A map of some things to see on the island.

You enter here.

Some small vendors in the area.

Only typhoon signal 3, so most things are operating.

One line for the Octopus card and another for people who have tokens. We have a free pass from the bus tour.

Not too many people on the ferry.

Lighter clouds now.

Another ferry coming back.

Our bus. We just missed the 4pm one by seven minutes, so we'll catch the 5pm one.

I would have liked to check out the view from Victoria Peak, but according to a webcam, it's all clouds.

Ferris Wheel.

Typhoon signal 3 is high winds, so it isn't operating. Signal 1 is a typhoon may be coming, 3 is strong winds, 8 is gale-force winds, and 9 and 10 are even stronger. There was originally all of the numbers between 1 and 10, but they got rid of everything except 1, 3, 8, 9, and 10 as the other numbers only indicated wind direction rather than strength and it confused people (because 5 was the same strength as 8, just from a different direction).

852 is the phone country code for Hong Kong.

A few guys fishing.

Time to start the bus ride. Again we sat on top, even though it was raining intermittently.

Looking straight up.

Rounded towers.

Some people shopping.

A little alley with many vendors in shacks.

A temple.

Antiques.

Another temple.

These trees are growing out of a wall.

Mural of American entertainers.

Hollywood Road.

Funky store front.

Government House, the residence of the governor when Hong Kong was under British rule, from 1855 to 1997.

The Consulate General of the United States, Hong Kong and Macau.

Very cool building, The Henderson.

The High Court.

More skyscrapers.

This one has a thinner area at the bottom.

Chinese Methodist Church.

There were only a few other people on top as it was raining quite heavily on and off. One guy didn't even bother with a rain coat or poncho; he just got wet.

A couple of others behind us.

All of the pedestrians with umbrellas.

Cool back-and-forth glass.

Colorful ceiling.

A huge screen.

More screens.

Sheng Kung Hui Saint Mary's Church. From the front it looks very Asian...

... and from the side it looks very European.

A fair amount of traffic around 6pm.

Big grocery store.

People waiting for the bus. Only the white guys don't have umbrellas.

Neat lights.

The lanes are marked with where they go. Instead of taking the ferry over, you can drive through a tunnel.

Harbor.

Difference wall faces.

Expensive hotels.

The upper connecting area between these two columns has a big hole in the middle.

The Lippo Centre Towers look like pandas are climbing them.

Eye of Infinity sculpture, located at the entrance of the Peak Tram.

A few different skyscrapers.

The Cheung Kong Center has many lights that change color.

It with The Henderson.

The HSBC Building has some lights on the side.

That also change color.

Edges outlined in blue.

Expensive stores around here.

More.

The Pedder Building. Built in 1923, it is the last surviving pre-World War II building in Pedder Street. Many of the tenants, including Abercrombie & Fitch, left due to skyrocketing rent costs.

All done with the bus tour.

They also have a night tour, but we saw many of the buildings lit up after sunset, so no need for us to go on that.

Yacht lit up.

The International Commerce Centre, across Victoria Harbour, has a light show on the surface of its 118 stories.

Walking to the subway.

A massive Apple store.

Last view of a couple of lit-up buildings.

A dessert from the mall near our hotel.

Many places were closed due to the winds, especially Disneyland.
