2024 Dec 27 | Ogii family in Oahu - Byodo-In Temple, Pearl Harbor
The volcano is still active. It's good to check social media to see where people are watching it from, as those might be better viewing angles. They're at the Volcano House, which we've never been to. Maybe we'll check it out.
This Kauai ophthalmology office is giving free eye exams and discounted glasses.
They're following the example of the free dental clinic presented by the Seventh Day Adventist Church. That's also who held the free health fairs by Santa Cruz.
They speak English, Spanish, and Korean. I wonder how many Spanish-only speakers are in Hawaii?
We have a bunch of people coming for the weekend and plenty of loofahs, but I just thought of we don't have enough places to hang wet loofahs. However, Target is out of suction cup hooks.
Walmart has some.
The app said they are on aisle I32, but the last aisle is I30.
Ah, the back wall is I32.
There they are.
We got the Mint eSIM to work on Naraa's phone.
It looks like they're renovating the building on the right, whose walls are now covered in yellow.
It used to have this "Aloha from Waikiki" mural.
I hope they remake it.
Another EU shaka license plate. (I think EU were the first shaka plates; that's what the Prius had. We got them for the RAV4 later and they're EX.)
Tsogt wanted the same sandals I had. We went to Walmart, which has the Ozark Trail brand, but they don't have these sandals any more. I checked online, and I don't believe they even make this model any more; I only found it used on eBay.
We stopped by Ross, but they didn't have any sandals that fit him, either.
This mirror in Ross seems like it belongs in a funhouse, not in a store to see how you look in your potential new outfit.
Stopping by Dorothy's Lei Stand at the airport.
Picking up Chemka.
And Billy.
Ogii putting their leis on.
Back home, Tsogt and Naraa had cooked.
Dinner.
Tsogt and Billy in the pool.
A little lizard sticking its head up from an umbrella stand.
Some of the units have Christmas lights on their balconies.
And this car is covered in lights.
Then we picked up Greg, Dagii, and Sarnai and all had drinks at home.
The next morning, we opened presents.
Everyone got a few.
Ogii and I also tried to get Hanauma Bay tickets for them.
They again sold out almost instantly.
Latest one at 7:03.
They sold out even faster for Sunday than they did for Friday.
But we got some this time. We aimed for later in the day.
And split it into two groups in two different time slots.
Sunrise.
I need to pick up a rental car, as everyone won't fit comfortably in the RAV4. We could put four people in the back trunk area, but that would be really tight. At least for now, it looks like there are some parking places available.
Walking to the International Marketplace. They turned one of the westbound lanes into a bus only lane recently.
It's 7:30am, and there's a long line for Kona Coffee.
It comes all the way back here.
There's a shorter line for people waiting for the car rental kiosk to open at 8am. I read it can get pretty busy as well, so I came a bit early. I counted 95 people in line for Kona Coffee and 7 people for the car rental.
Got the car at 8:25am.
Back at home. Greg and Naraa are exchanging snuff bottles as a greeting.
And Dagii is blessing Greg.
We drove to the Byodo-In Temple. It was very busy, but they had a few people directing traffic, which was very helpful.
Naraa and Tsogt.
You can ring the giant bell.
Sarnai.
Dagii.
Greg.
Chemka.
Billy.
Naraa.
Ogii.
And Tsogt.
A video of everyone ringing it.
Then into the temple, with the Amida Buddha statue.
Beyond the temple is a little pond.
Where you can feed the fish with pellets bought from the store.
A peacock.
The family in front of the temple.
Then we drove to Pearl Harbor. There's this huge mural across the highway.
The parking lot was full, but there were a few open spots on the side of the road.
The women at the entrance.
You aren't allowed to bring even purses or fanny packs in, so you have to store them outside.
Or, in our case, have someone who's going to stay outside and keep them all.
A map. There are multiple sections of the memorial, including some across the bridge on a small island.
We just walked around the first small area, though.
Submarine memorial.
Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum, which you can walk through.
Lone Sailor statue.
A relief sculpture of Oahu. There are two large mountain ranges, with Pearl Harbor between them to the south.
Don't let the coconuts fall on you.
Back at home, we cooked deer sausage for dinner.
Along with deer jerky.
Time to eat!
Then it was Sarnai's birthday party.
Blowing out her candles.
And presents.
Also some presents for Greg and Dagii.
Everyone together.
Then time to go out and watch the Friday night fireworks.
