2025 Mar 11 | Dad's day: food truck park, whales and yellowfin tuna on Captain Jim Sportfishing
Up early to reserve Hanauma Bay tickets at 7am. Since they can sell out instantly, all three of us were trying to get in.
Looking at Wednesday, around 8:10 and 8:20 didn't sell out for around 15 minutes, so we'll try for those times.
Luckily we got tickets. They all sold out in around 3 minutes, not nearly as slowly as the previous day.
A rainbow.
Breakfast at Liliha Bakery at Ala Moana Center.
Not too busy yet.
Macadamia nut waffle with berries.
Fruit bowl.
Omelet.
Many other baked goods.
This roof overhang had different patterns on it.
Then we drove to Ala Moana Park and saw a bit of a rainbow at the edge of the blue skyscrapers.
We started walking back, but then noticed the rainbow getting larger, so we ran back to the beach.
Made it.
This person was digging through the trash.
The birds followed him. Maybe he either purposely or accidentally dumped out stuff they could eat.
The water is very clear.
There are many huge trees on Magic Island people picnic under.
Monica, Ogii, and Mom under one.
The lagoon.
There were some spinner dolphings jumping out of the water and spinning around in front of this boat.
A cat in a tree cleaning itself.
Video of some spinner dolphins, a mongoose, and the cat.
Then we stopped back at Ala Moana Center. We passed It'Sugar.
Dad was amazed.
Aloha.
Out of jelly beans.
Many different types of mini Kit Kats.
I bought some for Ogii.
Another "aloha" out of jelly beans.
And a sea turtle picture.
An entire ocean scene.
With a sea horse and an octopus and a dolphin.
A volcano and rainbow, too, all from jelly beans.
I was hoping their historal section would have Black Jack, Clove, and Beeman's gum for Mom, but it didn't.
At an aloha sign.
We stopped by Apple to possibly buy a new iPhone for mom, but it would be much cheaper going through Verizon.
These people were discussing how to fix the water dripping from above in front of the store.
Then we went to EcoTown to get a nice aloha shirt for Dad.
Then to the food truck park for lunch.
More trucks here.
Even more.
Eating.
Lots of meat.
One of our favorite skyscrapers, Landmark, with one of our favorite murals, whales.
A shaka plate with EY. I don't think I've seen one of those before.
Then onto Krista with Captain Jim and Spencer.
Captain Jim going over safety instructions.
Leaving the harbor.
Monica on the cooler.
Mom on a more comfortable chair.
Spencer working on the anchor.
Out a bit farther.
I'm up top.
Captain Jim and Spencer.
First we headed east towards Diamond Head.
All of us ready to look for whales.
Me with a DSLR and big zoom lens.
There were a couple of other boats out there looking for whales, too.
Everyone watching.
There's one!
Look for the spout of water.
There were actually two together here.
A flying fish.
Honolulu and Diamond Head.
Now that we saw some whales, time to fish. We headed west and picked out our lures.
Then some sandwiches for lunch.
There was a screen in the cabin so we could see where we were and how deep it was.
It had been very windy the past few days, so the waves were rather big.
Monica acting like she's reeling in a fish.
We came across another whale out here.
Zoomed in.
It's blow hole.
Now we actually got a fish.
Dad reeled first while Spencer kept a close eye while also reeling in the other lines to not get in the way.
Then Monica's turn.
While Dad guided the line.
And finally Ogii's.
A yellowfin tuna.
Us with it.
Spencer cut it open.
So we could see what it had been eating.
A video of some of the whales and reeling in the fish.
Back at the dock.
Nice reflections just before sunset.
Another shot with the fish.
Spencer filleted it.
Ogii and Monica had a fresh bite.
The Monterey harbor had a boat called The Office, too.
Some people playing volleyball at the sand courts there.
