2025 Apr 05 | Kawika Trask Trio, Manoa Falls hike, Scottish Festival day 2

Ogii cooking breakfast.

Just a bit of color under dark clouds.

The drive to Moana Falls has some nice trees.

And views of the mountains.

You can pay for parking in the lot or park farther away in the community and walk in.

But parking is cheap, especially for locals.

They also sell all kinds of hiking supplies there, which is nice.

The lot opens at 8am, and by 8:15am, it was almost full, although there is additional parking up the hill.

This cat was interested in this chick.

So Ogii moved the chick over by a tree.

The start of the trail.

Some info on the area.

And a map of other nearby trails.

Info on this hike.

Many ants on this flower.

You're supposed to clean off your shoes before and after the hike so you don't spread diseases and invasive plant seeds.

The shoe brush.

Foliage-covered trees.

Walking through a container.

Out the other side.

To a very lush open area.

Info on trees.

And Oahu.

Purple flower.

Another one.

A little bridge with a flash flood warning.

Plants growing out of a rock.

Ogii hugging a huge tree.

The hike follows a stream, which occasionally has mini waterfalls.

Info on wildlife.

An interesting leaf that looks like a starfish.

Some muddy rocks.

Although they weren't too slippery.

A few puddles, but for the most part, the hike wasn't too muddy today.

Tall vines.

Red flower which fell from a tree.

Branches form a tunnel.

There were occasional views of the stream through the trees.

A little hole in the rock.

Another small waterfall.

With me.

There was also bamboo in places.

Ogii in it.

A little resting area.

With info.

And a bench.

Under some trees.

More bamboo.

Some stairs, although it was easier to go around the side than take the big step.

Our first view of the waterfall.

It has a couple of sections.

History of the valley.

Red berries.

A fruit.

This leads to another trail.

And this closed area...

... leads to the upper falls. They have a view of Honolulu, whereas the lower falls here do not, but it requires some climbing, including up tree roots.

Us with the falls.

Sometimes people swim in the pool below the falls, but nobody was there now.

Warning signs.

Leptospirosis is in the water.

A big rain cloud is coming. I hope it misses us.

Looking back at the waterfall on the way down.

Looking up at bamboo.

The bases have many tendrils.

Ogii walking through it.

The leaf is almost as big as the kid.

Large plants.

Circular-sprouting leaves.

There was plastic under the rocks here, which made it even more slippery.

So many bits of red flower on the ground.

From this tree above.

A very tall tree.

Some bamboo around me.

The mud wasn't too deep, but our shoes still got dirty on the bottom.

I only slipped a little bit once, coming down from a side path.

By a huge fern.

Ogii by some others.

A weird-looking growth.

Large flower.

Vines going up a tree.

Back to the open area.

And the container.

This blue fruit looks fake, like a sponge ball toy.

Cleaning our shoes on the way out.

There is also an arboretum here, but it's closed on the weekends.

A rooster.

A net of tree leaves overhead.

Ogii getting a picture.

These white anthurium are very large.

I picked up a bit of trash on the hike.

A very dirty van.

The Rainbow's End Snack Shop is at the entrance of the parking lot.

Up the stairs is a path...

... which leads over the entrance road...

... to a hose to wash your shoes and the second parking lot.

Looking at the snack shop, which is actually quite a large building.

There's something written in Hawaiian on the wall.

Google Translate has Hawaiian.

And does a pretty good job.

Although you have to move it around and angle it differently somet imes to get all of the words.

Almost at the end.

Come on in.

Beautiful picture.

Paintings of birds.

The snack shop.

Which also has various hiking items.

Water shoes and slippers.

Pretty painting.

An area with a few seats.

Even more over here.

One room had more artwork.

And another had dance lessons.

An amazing image of Pele.

Honeycreepers by Alexa Thoen.

Many historical photos over here.

Of the valley.

Some more.

And more.

Soldiers.

History.

A picture of three waterfalls.

Info.

Don't wash mud off in the sinks. That's what the hose by the second parking lot is for.

A store which seems to sell souvenirs, although it's not open now. I thought this was just a small snack store, but there is so much more here.

Many chickens by the entrance.

They scatter when a little GoCar comes.

A baby.

Speaking of which, the one Ogii moved doesn't look like its doing too well.

Especially because this car almost smooshed it.

Unfortunately the other chickens didn't seem to be taking care of it.

So we gave it a bit of water.

A huge tree on the drive back.

Another one.

A large peach colored building.

A mother chicken and her babies crossing the road.

Another hen with a few chicks of her own.

We saw many different sets of chicks while walking over the weekend.

Back at the Scottish Festival for their second day.

Sheaf toss.

Hammer throw.

Women as well.

A little shaded area to watch the games from.

You don't expect palm trees and Scotland.

Luchd Ciuil gun Briogais band.

Highland Dance.

Younger girls.

A video of some parts over the two days.

Back past the chicks to the car.

Ogii cooking.

And sewing.
