2025 May 17 | Honolulu murals, Kim's Convenience, Wordscapes, third weekend flying to Kona, BI bus routes

Reverend Kanai and Kumiko are moving back to Las Vegas, so we visted them.

Ogii and Kumiko exchanged gifts.

Another hot lava RAV4.

You see many people sitting in the back of trucks, but not as many standing.

Mural at a school.

A bit more of it.

A nice quote.

And another one.

The painters.

Another one beside it.

That's an attention-grabbing spare-tire cover.

This truck had some characters hanging from above a tire.

The USPS dropoff station at Safeway is gone.

Although they still have a kiosk to renew your DMV vehicle registration.

Double rainbow.

I tried vacuuming all of the sand from the back of the RAV4 at the gas station, but I couldn't get it all.

Since the Young Brothers shipping info says it has to be free of sand and seeds and such when it's shipped, I decided to get it detailed to be safe. I took it to Auto Perfection, which is where I had the Prius detailed before we sold it.

A little coffee shop nearby.

With very good fresh muffins.

And seating upstairs.

Not many other people right now.

There are many murals around this area.

A weird one.

Very cool animal hospital mural.

They also had an image in the chain-link fence.

Composed of these little clip-in squares.

Very nice.

Listening to music.

Around the corner.

The Native American is blocked by the trucks.

A very large mural.

Simple woman.

Dolphins and whales.

Diamond Head.

I'm OK with no shirts in CVS, but at least put on some shoes. I woudln't even want to walk on the sidewalks outside without shoes.

Extra-strength Pataday is over-the-counter now for under $40.

Usually ODSpecs is pretty reliable for eye drop info, but it says it's still rx-only for $500.

I didn't know jasmine grew fruit.

More murals.

One for their store.

There were multiple ones on this building of Ward Village.

Blue Hawaii.

Boombox.

Singers.

Organic.

Hawaiian words.

Ogii's favorite buildings.

Kilauea is erupting again. It goes on and off every few days now for around 20 times.

The RAV4 is all clean. Maybe I can take the orange Porshe in front of it instead.

Or the orange Honda.

Hyperlapse of the moonrise.

Doom: The Dark Ages isn't even out yet, only as reviewer copies, but there are already 13-hour, full-game playthroughs on YouTube.

Olympians mural.

Back to Concentra for another fit test as I didn't use the correct N95 mask last time. I like their sign.

Waiting in one of their rooms.

A slit lamp?

Ah, I'm in the eye suite. That makes sense.

This is the huge, awesome mural you see when you're driving to the airport.

And the other side, which you see driving from the airport.

The shaka to heart mural.

We had dinner at Island Vintage Wine Bar.

We had a flight of three wines: Charles Le Bel 1818 'Inspiration' Brut Champagne (Dry), Jean Reverdy Sancerre Blanc (Sauvignon Blanc), and Aperture "Bordeaux-Style" Red Blend (Sonoma, California).

Ogii with some food.

Bread.

Charcuterie.

Very good sukiyaki soba.

Fireworks on a Wednesday? There must be some special occastion.

Wide and short rainbow.

The water is so blue.

We like getting massages at the Hawaii Massage School from students because they're cheap.

We even get a $10 kama'aina discount.

Ogii cooked salmon for dinner.

A huge yota.

At the Honolulu Harbor Nights food truck park.

Food trucks and benches.

There are only three food trucks open, though. Thai...

... Mexican...

... and Brazilian.

We got Thai fried rice.

And a Brazilian pastel (which is the meat in dough that every culture makes).

Smiley face mural nearby.

The Prince Kuhio party boat headed out.

The Na Hoku II coming in.

We were going to take it for the fireworks show, but it got canceled by rain.

So we decided to skip the sail.

And go to the Moana Valley Theatre.

To watch Kim's Convenience.

Which was a play before it was a TV show.

Us.

I think everyone should be able to pick one snack before the show.

The clouds look like an animal eating the sun.

A lot of stuff out on the curb to be thrown away. Some of those look pretty nice.

People riding in the back of a truck.

Surfing women and flowers.

Another woman surfing.

Dolphins jumping.

Flying back to Kona again with stuff. Since we're Hawaiian residents, when we fly on Hawaiian Airlines, we get one free checked bag for free and a second for $20, instead of the usual $30 and $40.

Nobody in the seats across from us.

Not many people on the plane at all.

Magic Island in Honolulu.

There's a jazz fest going on in Kona, but it's quite expensive.

A goat.

We found some new spots of termite frass.

This place is also furnished, but the owner's kitchen stuff is rather old and rusty, so we put all of it in this cabinet.

And this one.

Then we'll put our own newer kitchen stuff in these drawers to use.

Lunch at Ohana Q BBQ.

Semi-open seating.

With the volcano livestream on TV.

Nice paint job inside.

Our food.

We drove by a large soccer field.

And a car wash.

On our way to Target. Not many carts left.

Pretty colors of energy drinks.

Three open houses and a garage sale.

Old truck.

Horses.

Some nice Mongolian pillows we can put on the couch.

Their tags.

A few bottles of alcohol.

More goats.

A pet relief station at the Kona airport.

Terminals 11 and 12 are back in this building.

The other terminals are outdoors, but these two are inside with air conditioning. Good to know this is here if it's ever too hot waiting outside.

Different airlines.

Funny luggage tag.

Lots of lava.

With some beaches scattered along the coast.

Kaho'olawe, an uninhabited Hawaiian island. It's sacred to the Hawaiians and associated with the god Kanaloa, the god of the ocean and deep sea. It was used by the US Navy as a bombing range, and is now being restored.

More murals. A shark eating shakas.

A little girl.

People and a rose.

Plants.

Many different ones.

Women eating in back of a truck.

Very detailed.

Simpler.

A valley.

One of my favorite gates, on McCully St between Date and Fern streets.

The buses in Honolulu are really great and will get you almost anywhere. Big Island has the Hele-On bus. It can even get you across the island between Kona and Hilo, although it's much slower than driving.

More zoomed in view of the stops in the cities.

I was hoping I could take it to and from work, like I did with BART in San Francisco, but while it's a 15-minute drive, it's a 1-hour bus ride. And the closest stop is a 35-minute walk from home.

Actually, there is a stop closer to us.

And it seems to be on the correct route, the 504 Kealakekua Tripper.

Unfortunately, it seems to only run once a day, and in the opposite direction of what I need. I need this way to be around 7:30am, but it's only 2:45pm.

And I need the other direction to be around 5pm, but it's only 8:00am. It's weird this bus only has a single route all day.

The 90 Pahala route also goes where I need, and around the time I need in the morning (leave around 7:20am, arrive around 7:50am). However, it goes back home too early (leave around 4:20pm, and I'd need after 5:00pm), and it only goes every 2 hours in the afternoon.

Also, it doesn't stop at the stop near home.

I could try to flag down the driver every day, as even the Hele-On website says you can do that. But I don't know if I'd trust that to happen every time.

Also, everyone says the buses often aren't on time.

So it looks like I'll have to drive to and from work instead of taking the bus.
