2026 Jan 18 | Maui for work, whales from Mau'umae Beach, sunset at Spencer Beach
Ogii found a baby gecko.
His spots are different shades of green.
From the front.
Ogii gave it a piece of pineapple.
It licked some.
The volcano is erupting again.
Small at 8:20am.
Larger by 8:50am.
Around the max at 9:30am.
Starts getting smaller at 6pm.
Almost.
And done.
It lasted just under 10 hours.
New season of Fallout.
Two of my optometry professors died within a few days of each other
Highway 1 was closed for three years between Big Sur and San Luis Obispo. I wonder how the businesses there did; I remember it being quite difficult to drive to some of them, as we had to go out and around.
Early morning flight. Kona always has a very short security line.
I hadn't noticed this statue before.
It's on a base.
With different scenes.
Church and flowers.
Woman.
Beach scene.
Man on a horse.
Old warrior.
Southwest is getting rid of open seating soon.
Walking to the plane.
I don't like the very front seats; there's no seat in front of you to store your bag.
And no seat in front of you with USB phone charge plugs.
One annoying thing about flying from Big Island to Maui is there are only a few direct flights in the middle of the day, so if you fly early or late, you have to go through Honolulu. They had a stand where you can buy seeds.
The bird of paradise seeds are neat.
Many different types of plumeria.
There are birds flying around in the airport.
Sitting on top of a projector.
Sitting on a seat.
They put anti-bird spikes on top of the monitors, but the birds just sit behind them.
Sunrise.
It's starting to rain, so there are droplets on the plane windows.
If you find a round one and zoom in...
... you can see the Honolulu skyline.
Although the raindrop picture is pretty distorted; this is a normal picture.
Leaving Honolulu.
A big flat cloud.
Flying over Molokai.
Halawa Bay is very distinctive.
With its double cove.
With a farther out view...
... you can see a little island to the side.
Actually two islet seabird sanctuaries: Mokuho‘Oniki is the larger one in front, and Kanahā Rock is the smaller one behind.
Landing in Maui.
Both Hawaiian and Alaskan have someone's face on the tail.
Kahului Airport.
You can walk to the rental cars.
Or take this little train.
If you walk, you might have to wait for the train to go through.
The the barriers will open.
Then walk up this ramp.
It's only a few minutes either walking or riding, so not too far, but if the train is there, it's a bit faster.
I can pick from any of these cars.
This is cute.
It's a Mazda Miata convertible.
Although the hardtop version is still fairly enclosed.
I think I'd prefer to softtop as it's more open.
Ogii was watching someone cleaning up a coconut palm tree.
He was removing fronds and chopping off coconuts.
After work, I went here for dinner. Below is Seven Pools Lounge. I was thinking it would have pool tables, but it actually has karaoke. Above is Chabelita's Mexican Restaurant.
Which is where I went. Nobody else eating right now.
The food was great.
Then I checked into the hotel.
My room.
Ogii was watching geckos back at home.
Keeping an eye on her.
And watching the sunset.
Colorful clouds.
Outside the hotel.
Another rental Miata.
Costcto is right across the road; I can smell the pizza and hot dogs.
There's also a food truck park right by the hotel.
Google Maps says it's open 9am to 8pm every day.
It was only 6pm, but most of them were already closed.
Both closed.
One of three open.
One of two open. I guess it's better to go during lunchtime.
A nice painting in the hotel.
Info.
About the artist.
A small snack shop.
One problem with nicer hotels is they have these thermostats that don't go very high. It maxed out at 79 on the thermostat, but it was actually colder than that in the room, only 73.
Thankfully there's a hack for these thermostats.
You press the right combination of buttons...
... and the maximum temp goes from 79 to 85, and it actually gets much warmer in the room.
Downstairs the next morning.
Nice seating area.
Nice sculptures.
A breakfast area where you can order food. The selection is limited, but they did have French toast.
This beef jerky stick is so close to coming out. I'm surprised someone didn't shake the vending machine more. Although maybe they did and this was as far as it went.
Back at the airport.
The sign says it's a 3 minute walk from the rental cars to the terminal.
But the tram arrived right then, so I took that.
The security line is a bit longer here.
I was in a bit of a rush, but then my flight got delayed half an hour.
So I went and grabbed some food.
A woman on her phone silhouetted in the window.
Now all of the flights got delayed, and mine even more. I was a bit worried I wouldn't make my connection, but the gate agent said it would be fine. Also, there were multiple later flights I could catch that were fairly empty.
There was a monitor above where everyone was waiting at the gate.
With pretty pictures from around Hawaii.
Although for most of these views...
... you'd need a helicopter.
Same to see Papalaua Falls.
We've been to Halawa Valley, though.
Even though the gate agent said not to worry, when I landed at Honolulu, they were already boarding my flight to Kona.
Thankfully I made it to the gate on time.
Ogii made potato salad the next morning for a potluck at my work.
Looking good.
I had orange juice for breakfast; she had pickle juice from the jar of pickles she used for the salad.
There were many meat dishes.
Salads.
Freshly-squeezed lemon juice.
Desserts.
Ogii watching surfers.
A few got up.
And surfed for a while.
Then she also saw some whales.
Including these two.
And this one breaching.
Many different cameras set up for sunset.
To catch the green flash.
A spider on our balcony was starting to make a web here.
Sorry buddy, but that's where we walk, so I'm going to have to move you.
Thankfully it was just starting to build its web, so I didn't destroy too much.
Some of our neighbor's sheep.
Driving north.
You can just make out the observatory.
Some goats along the road.
We at ate Seafood Bar and Grill.
Cipriano's Kitchen was right next door.
They weren't open yet, although the Italian food smelled great.
Maybe next time.
Some slippahs on the stairs up.
Inside.
The decor is fun.
Neat chairs.
Lots of stuff on the walls.
Even more.
Wait, this game is still on? Oh, it's in overtime.
Now the next one starts.
Well that was fast; the Seahawks scored a touchdown on the opening kickoff return.
I wonder if the 49ers kicker had played soccer at some point; he's trying to slide tackle the runner.
Time for some drinks.
Ogii tasting the rim.
Food.
Burger.
Fried rice.
Dessert.
The waitress brought a to-go box because she didn't think Ogii would finish the rice.
But she did.
Another touchdown.
It's only the first quarter and it seems like this game is already over.
Nearby was Spencer Beach, where people can camp in tents.
Although we were headed for Mau'umae Beach. While Spencer Beach has multiple parking lots, you can only reach Mau'umae Beach by walking along a trail to the south.
Through some trees.
By some others.
Through these.
Through some tall weeds.
Along a rocky coast.
With an area that can have flash floods.
One last section.
And we're at the beach.
The trail continues here, although I don't know how far it goes.
A private gate to the west.
The beach was almost emtpy.
Only a few people on this side.
We came to watch whales, and we weren't disappointed.
We got out the DSLR.
With the 600mm zoom lens.
And saw one coming up.
Breaching.
A flipper up.
And a tail.
Neat branches.
These dogs owned by separate people enjoyed playing together.
