2026 Feb 15 | Lance and Sarah visiting, Ohana Ranch ATV Tour, Hilo drinks and dinner, making chocolate

That's a different cruise ship.

The Queen Mary 2.

Japanese cookies.

From Ogii's friend Keiko.

The neighbor sprayed the coqui frogs and killed them all off. However, they were back to full force in a week.

There are a lot of moths around right now.

Inside as well.

I caught some in a glass.

And the geckos took care of the rest.

Nom nom.

Ogii getting the Mongolian New Year instructions from her father.

We've been watching the old episodes of Roseanne. This actor, Yakov Smirnoff, was also on Night Court as Yakov Korolenko.

And the doctor in the episode was Lynne Thigpen, whom I remember from Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?

This guy bought pineapples and heart balloons at Walmart.

They're replacing their Valentines Day stuff...

... with Easter stuff.

Which is annoying, because tomorrow is Valentine's Day, and I wanted to buy some of the light-up necklaces, but they already packed them up.

Friday Night Food Trucks.

We had FOB Polynesian Cuisine.

Lots of meat dishes.

And sides.

A dessert truck.

The food trucks got kicked out of the Target parking lot because teenagers went into Target and caused problems. Now, there are a lot of teens here, too.

I hope they don't annoy Macy's and make the food trucks move again.

Dinner.

Lots of good food.

Pretty pink clouds.

And a cloudy sunset.

We bought t-shirts for our upcoming whale count.

Neat logo.

Saturday morning was a pancake breakfast at Daifukuji Soto Mission.

Pancakes.

Rice.

Sides.

It was a nice variety of food.

Then onto beach yoga.

Stretching.

Stretching more.

Looking up at the tree tops.

Hey, I can see my shadow.

Because the sun is creeping over the trees.

Some bodyboarders.

Stopping by a farmer's market.

To buy some chocolate beans.

These vines are braided.

I've seen twisted vines, but to be braded three strands on each side like that, I'm assuming someone did that instead of it being natural.

A whale slapping its tail.

Driving over to Hilo. Clouds low in the mountains.

Rain on the other side.

Sheep along the side.

More.

Lots of lava.

Plants growing out of it.

Horses.

Driving down a small road.

Turning here.

Up this little path.

To Ohana Ranch.

Putting on raincoats and boots for their ATV tour.

Walking down.

To all their ATVs.

Some people rode the open four wheelers.

We were in the enclosed ones, with Lance and Sarah behind us.

Headed out.

It was raining but we didn't have wipers, so when we stopped, I hopped out to clear the raindrops off the windshield.

Some little animals.

Driving along the trail.

Our first stop was an imu, an underground oven.

You don't want to use lava rocks for cooking as they'll explode if there's water in them.

Some cows.

Rain drops on a leaf.

Plants.

She pulled some out for Ogii to take home.

Some more.

And even more.

All loaded up.

Now Ogii's turn to drive.

Some rocks by the side of the trail have arrows on them.

Although we just followed these guys.

And the other guys followed us.

Next stop.

By our vehicle.

Under a canopy.

Looking at their newly-planted coffee trees.

One up close.

A neat flower.

And another.

Beautiful drive.

Another stop.

With some fresh rasperries we could pick.

A big one.

Ogii by it.

Me about to eat it.

I almost walked into this spider web.

Little guy hanging out in the center of the web.

Interesting plant.

It was fun driving through the mud puddles.

Some clips of our ride.

Afterwards.

They're building a new hut.

Our tour guides were great. She also texted us a ton of things to do on Big Island.

Then we headed to The Hidden Nene.

I like the doorman's goose and rose.

Headed in.

Ordering.

Someone beside us got a flaming drink.

I didn't notice above the bar last time...

... is a picture of a goose.

Our drinks.

Us with them.

Ogii trying hers.

Lance and Sarah's.

Cheers!

Ogii trying the spam on mine.

Charcuterie board.

Then onto Moon & Turtle.

Wine.

Cheers again.

Salad.

Sushi.

Fish.

Pasta.

Dessert.

Nice picture.

A mural outside.

And another.

We stayed with them at the house south of Hilo they were at. The stray pigs had dug up the yard.

One walking by in the morning.

Some baby pigs.

Ogii by a heart in the sidewalk.

Interesting plant.

Flower.

Many flowers.

Purple yota and pink sales stand.

Baby chickens in the rain.

Driving home. Rain by the hills again.

Ogii planting her plants from Ohana Ranch.

Time to make chocolate. I cracked them open.

They're very gooey inside.

Ogii pulling them out.

And cooking them.

Breaking off the shells.

Putting them in a blender.

Blending them.

But it wasn't working very well; they just moved up to the sides.

So we tried a coffee grinder.

That worked better.

Adding cocoa butter.

Very smooth now.

Ogii spooning it onto a cooking sheet.

She made some hearts, glasses, and a whale.

All done.

I made steaks.

Second one.

Dinner. The home-made chocolate was good.

The volcano is starting to erupt.

There it goes.

We texted Lance and Sarah, since they were over there.

It took an hour for them to get in and then a long time to find parking, but they saw it.

It got pretty big again.

Meanwhile, it's snowing on Mauna Kea. Some people sledded down it.

We're going to Maui, and Mamas Fish House is usually booked up a few months in advance. However, sometimes they have last-minute cancellations. Thankfully I refreshed the page just at the right time and got one.

I've had this yardstick from the South Dakota State Fair for many years now. It's always held up well.

But the Hawaiian climate finally made the leather strap at the end start to degrade. The weather here is really hard on many things.
