2026 Mar 22 | Hilo for work, neighbor animals, roadside Thai and burger

Goats by the side of the road when driving over to Hilo.

Clouds in the mountains.

And over the lava.

A line of clouds.

Driving into them. Some of us are stuck behind a truck.

The speed limit is 60, but we're going 45.

And it's difficult to pass, because any time there's not a double yellow line, there are cars coming from the other direction.

Finally we all made it around, one by one.

Goats near Hilo.

Gotta be careful on the one-lane roads.

Someone hit a pig.

The office there still has a Tyler's Quarterly from 2007. This used to be the main way to look up all of the contact lenses available and their parameters, but I think most people have switched over to online lists now.

I'm in the mood for a burger and fries.

K's Drive In will work well for that.

Nice simple dinner.

A mural nearby.

And another one of bikers.

I was planning on getting a haircut this weekend, but I saw this Supercuts, and they were open for another 30 minutes and had an opening, so I got it done here.

There's a little food court.

With various fast food restaurants.

And a Walmart.

Which has some nice murals.

In the entrance.

I stayed at an AirBnB for the night.

It's like how AirBnB was originally; a few rooms rented out of someone's house.

With just a sticky note for my room.

I just need a bed for the night, so it works well.

This house has a lot of moss on it.

Especially the front steps.

Someone living in their car.

Near Rainbow Falls.

Which are very strong due to all the recent rain.

The fan blaes are very simple; I like them.

More rain on the drive home, but not much traffic in my direction.

Although I did get stuck behind this guy for a while.

As did other people. Many places drivers are supposed to pull over if there are more than five people behind you, but I guess not here.

Ogii bought me some retro candy.

All kinds of good stuff.

We had lifted the balcony rug up to dry off after the rains.

Although the neighbor below said water was running down this post.

I don't know what to do about that, so some floor experts will come and take a look.

Dinner at Clover and Bowl.

Which has Korean BBQ.

And a random cat.

Which Ogii petted.

Up on the bench.

Kneading her leg.

Right next door is a cold storage business.

Which also has a self-serve cooler with ice bags out front.

Even coins to make change for yourself.

Eating our Korean BBQ.

There isn't a single cashier at Safeway at 7pm; weird.

Nobody stocking shelves, either. I wonder if they had a strike or just couldn't get workers to come in for some reason.

I like strawberries, but you have to be careful with the ones in Hawaii; many of them are already moldy even at the store.

Our trip to Japan is over two weeks away and Ogii is already packed.

Eye Buy Direct has a 30% off everything coupon, but only if both frames are above $15, and one of the frames I like is cheaper than that, so I can't use this coupon.

They had another coupon for buy one, get one free, though.

And that one worked.

But it was only for the frame, which is $9, and not the lensese, which are $110.

But if I used another coupon code, that gives 40% off lenses.

Which ended up being the best way to go. Only $80 for a pair of progressive glasses is so much cheaper than buying them in stores.

Ogii is watching the sheep.

The baby lamb is still running around.

Neat clouds at sunset.

This tree by us is blooming.

Many flowers.

It's an African tulip tree.

The birds like it.

More birds.

And another one.

They pick the seeds, which are brown with a flat clear border, out of the pods, which are long and brown.

Ogii grabbed some of the pods to maybe use as serving dishes or something.

Ogii now watching the pigs.

They like to run around.

We picked up some yen from the bank. It had to be ordered, and they were just about to return it since we hadn't picked it up yet.

We got $1,000 worth. We can probably use cards most places, but at least some might require cash.

Ogii all ready to go.

Watching Wicked For Good.

You have to pay to watch it on Amazon, but it's free on Peacock.

Even though we pay for Peacock monthly, we still have to watch ads.

Two and a half minutes of them before the show.

I still don't like the movie as much as the play.

But it does have some very pretty scenes.

Another one.

Sunrise.

Beach cleanup.

A lot of wood on the beach from the storms.

Still some big waves.

Yoga.

A cool shell.

With a few circles of purple.

Ogii found some round rocks.

To make a cairn.

She put it on our table at home.

A neighbor gave us some tea.

Along with mung beans and treats.

Ogii cut her own hair, although I had to straighten out the back a bit.

The optometry office here...

... All Eyes...

... was just sold.

I never met the old doctor...

... and I don't know the new one, the website still says it's Dr. Kale, but at least one person isn't happy with the change.

This roadside area has some food stands.

Elotes.

Bento boxes.

Two Thai places.

Smash burger.

I got the burger.

And a drink I haven't tried before.

Ogii got Thai.

We also got boba...

... from this one.

Lots of food, which means leftovers.

Ogii making a hole in a coconut.

For dinner.

Watching Polar.

Some very pretty scenes.

Sunset.

With pink light rays afterwards.

All the way across the sky.
