2026 Jun 06 | working in Maui, Keiko visiting, King Kamehameha Day Parade

Two geckos looking over to the right.

We went to Sweet Journey for breakfast.

Their menu.

Inside.

A wheel to spin for free items.

Me in their cone cutout.

Ogii with our food.

There are many different eggs, but even the ones branded as Big Island are actually from the mainland.

As are these Mauna Kea ones.

Also from the mainland.

Finally, these are from the island.

Kalua pork on sale.

Ogii always use to make tsuivan noodles by hand, but then she found these, and they work great, saving her a ton of time.

Only KTA has them, and they don't have them very often, but they are here today.

Ooh, free Noms with 400 points.

Aw, 75 points short. Maybe next time.

At Goodwill. We found a good book for Dad.

This fire bowl is cool, but we have no use for it.

I want a few new light cargo shorts.

These are nice, by Tori Richard, and even have the waistband I like.

Unfortunately, they have a stain on them.

These swim trunks are cool.

Zippered pockets.

I found some change in one of the pockets; nice.

Unfortunately, they're size 30, so a little too small for me and a little too big for Ogii.

Raodside carnitas.

We often find many termite wings on the floor here.

There were a bunch of ants coming into the kitchen through the window here.

I followed their trail and sprayed it with ant killer as I went.

Down to the balcony floor.

Along here.

Back up.

To by this window corner.

Then back down.

To a tiny hole in the balcony floor.

One sticking it's head up.

My phone didn't charge overnight.

I bought these new charges, which are supposed to be faster, but they require the phone to be lined up more precisely than the older version we had before. You'd think the newer one would be more forgiving, but nope.

Ogii made a bacon smiley face.

At the airport at 5am.

Minimal line at security, as always.

Each of the Hawaiian planes is named after a local bird.

This one is Io, a hawk.

It's Hawaii's only native hawk. I don't think I've seen one of these.

Leaving Big Island.

Coming into Oahu.

Downtown Honolulu and Diamond Head under sun beams.

The Honolulu airport has a nice open garden area.

With nice-smelling plumeria.

Then onto Maui. I love when they have the little Miatas.

Except it took me a while to find the volume control; it's down in the middle.

And I love smelling the jasmine on my walk in to work.

What's that hiding in the bushes?

A rooster.

At the food trucks by Costco.

A hen with her chicks.

Another.

It was fun watching the chicks fly from one picnic table to the other to follow their mom.

I decided to have dinner at the hotel instead.

Especially because it was still happy hour.

Pizza, fries, and a cookie.

The temperature doesn't go high enough.

Unless you hack it. I always forget how, but there are videos on Youtube.

And the chair is too low / the desk is too high, so I have to use pillows as a booster seat.

Hula outside my window.

Clouds in the mountains.

Four Sisters Bakery for the butter rolls. The last time I got there right when they opened and there was no line. This time I was 15 minutes later, and there was already quite a line.

Inside.

I also got some banana bread.

I missed the tram at the airport, but it's a short walk.

And a short line for security.

If you don't have an acceptable ID, you can pay $45 and still go through. I thought before you could always go through without ID for free, although they'd question you more. This TSA ConfirmID started in February 2026.

The woman in front of me had Krispy Kreme donuts.

A few flight delays.

I'm too old to sleep like this one; my neck would really hurt after I woke up.

Trying to get on an earlier flight; I was on standby.

Which seems weird, because the flight was only half full. Why not just give me a seat right away?

There's a huge asymmetry between the under-seat storage area. The window side is tiny, while the aisle side is huge.

Although nobody is sitting beside me.

So I'll put my backpack on the aisle side.

A light rainbow.

The the plane turned, and the rainbow was on the other side.

Another one on my side while flying.

All of the lava flows let you know you're arriving at Big Island.

Some chickens and a baby sheep.

With its mother.

The chickens and sheep don't seem to mind each other.

A few short clips of the baby sheep.

A truck was driving between Kona and Hilo when it was raining, hydroplaned into the other lane, and was hit by another truck. The driver was trapped inside and died. Have to be careful when it's raining.

Someeone labeled some of the plants we planted.

Kalo.

Another label.

Uala.

Keiko, Ogii's friend from LA, came to visit. They went to get some White Dog coffee, but it was only the farm there with no store to buy any.

They went to Pu'uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park.

There are some goats there.

Then the opening ceremony of the Pacific Asian Cultural Festival.

Offerings.

Dancing.

Only two men.

Women.

More.

There were many fallen plumeria flowers while walking along Alii Drive the next morning.

And also some horse poop, which doesn't smell as good.

Fun sign of a shark with an ice cream cone.

People have their chairs set out for the parade.

Making leis.

We had breakfast at the Hamakua Macadamia Nut Company.

It was along the parade route, ...

... so we could watch the parade...

... while we ate.

Nice hat and horse flowers.

A rapper.

Pretty view.

Little Miss Kona Coffee.

Gotta have people to scoop up the horse poop.

Each of the islands had people on horses.

Amazing hair flowers.

And another.

Even some on the horse hooves.

Another island.

And another.

Samoa, which had dancers.

A volcano which shot out foam.

A tree with multi-colored fruit.

There was a festival after the parade.

With food and craft vendors.

Lemonade.

Offerings.

Laying more at the table.

Many pretty flowers.

Then a man came in singing.

With drummers.

Stopping by the farmer's market afterwards.

Lots of good stuff.

Including mountain apples.

Ogii preparing the fruit.

While I open a coconut.

We had bought this nice grocery bag at the festival after the parade.

Then Ogii and Keiko went to see some sea turtles.
